Roslyn Wakari v Green Island at Ellis Park saw Roslyn looking to get its first points on board and Green Island wanting to back up last weeks victory. It was a great match and a classic game of 2 halves. The first half was a tight affair with Green Island applying the early pressure and Roslyn remaining resolute.
Green Island were making inroads down the right hand side through Matt Milton, forcing Roslyn's custodian Tom Stevens to make a couple of sharp saves. Roslyn then went close with Nathan Wilkie forcing Christian Firth to tip his shot around the far post. The second half resumed as the first finished with a battle in the middle of the park.
As the game started to open up, it was Green Island who took advantage with Matt Brazier driving forward and drawing a foul right on the edge of the box. Tom Milton calmly dispatched the free kick into the side netting of the far post to make it 0-1. Stevens made a couple of more reactive saves to keep it at 0-1 before Roslyn's Josh Lucas headed in the equaliser on 63 minutes Green island responded nearly instantly as Brazier latched on to a loose ball after a long free kick and buried it home with 66minutes played.
Brazier was everywhere and his cross was met by Caleb Williams 2 minutes for a 2 goal buffer . Roslyn did rally when Tennessee Kinghorn bundled the ball over the line after another Lucas header, only for an offside flag to be raised despite the home teams passionate appeals.
They were then denied a penalty after Lucas and Firth clashed in the box. With Roslyn chasing the game Josh Lucas was pushed up front and this allowed Brazier the space to exploit the gaps in the back and a further 3 late goals including a spectacular own goal by Harley Rodeka on 86 minutes made the game safe. Brazier got his second with a powerful header before completing his hatrick with a mazy run into the box to make it 6 on 90 minutes.
Green Isand co- coach Mark Foster commented that Eddie Wilkinson was again superb in creating space and drawing in the opposition
Queenstown have started the season with a bang and Northern were not able to slow down their start with Queenstown scoring six in each half.
Thomas Mills and Josh Bowden both bagged hat tricks. Willem Ebbinge got a brace and Jake Johnson,Paul Rodwell ,Ollie Ceci and Jan Kumar ensured Queenstown have a healthy goal difference with 2 games played. Coach Jamie Whitmarsh was impressed by his teams positive first half that was then improved on by their work rate and play in the second half. A complete team effort. Queenstown also farwelled Gabriel Garnica their Argentinian goalkeeper who is moving to the North Island shortly. A man who trains fantastically and has contributed massively to Queenstowns senior environment.
Mosgiel vs Wanaka: A must win game for both teams after losses in round 1. Mosgiel came out firing and within 2 minutes, Lewis Wall had won a penalty. Cody Brook slotted home for 1.0. Not long after, a fast-paced counter attacking move saw Cam Anderson latch on to the end of a cross from the right wing to make it 2 -0. Brook then made it 3-0 with a trademark left footed finish into the bottom corner. Another lightning counter attack set Cam Anderson free down the left wing, whose cross was eventually smashed into the bottom corner by Aidan Barbour-Ryan, who was the teams stand-out performer on the day just before half time.
Wanaka picked up their game at the beginning of the second half, putting Mosgiel under pressure with the pace of Adam Hewson and Steve Pleskun, and the industry of Michael Gealogo and Fletch Cavanagh. Mosgiel, however, absorbed the pressure, and with another fast break made it 5 nil, with left back Rory Findlay getting on the end of a cross to bag his first senior goal for the club.
Wanaka were unlucky, as it seemed there was at least one offside in the build-up to the goal. Soon after, a pin point delivery into the box from Alex Cox found the head of Liam Dungey to stretch the advantage to 6 nil. Mosgiel saved the best for last, with Aidan Barbour-Ryan popping up on the left wing and turning the Wanaka defence inside out on a mazy run, before crossing for Cam Anderson who stepped over and left the ball for the oncoming Brook who completed his hat trick with aplomb.
Caversham and Dunedin Technical scrapped for a share of the points at a bitterly cold and breezy Hancock Park. The 0-0 draw was hard watching at times and showed that both sides have a way to go before getting up to full sharpness
Caversham could legitimately argue it dominated large chunks of the match and was only let down by some rusty execution, yet Tech showed plenty of spirit and counter-attacked strongly in a bid to stage a smash-and-grab.
Will Turner was a bright spark going forward for Tech, while goalkeeper Cade Fink stayed on top of anything that came his way.
Caversham captain Jared Grove showed his class in the middle of the park, Jed Collings and Rhys Henderson did some tidy work at the back, and Connor Neil showed flashes of his ability.
Caversham had the wind in the first half and immediately looked threatening. However, too many probing attacks fizzled out due to a lack of composure with the final touch. Ben Wade tried a speculative shot in the 18th minute that floated over the bar, and a Grove cross shortly after was just out of Ben Kiore’s reach.
Caversham was handed a golden opportunity in the 28th minute when it was awarded a free kick a couple of metres outside the box. Veteran defender Craig Ferguson, somewhat surprisingly, took the shot and kicked it straight at keeper Fink.
Tech captain Michael Neaverson created his side’s first half-chance, firing wide in the 31st minute, and Caleb Osborne found space right on halftime but Caversham goalie Sean van Dyk produced a tidy save.
Turning into the wind, Caversham started the second half strongly. Jed Collings headed wide from a corner, Kiore fashioned a decent attempt on goal, and Kaleb de Groot-Green did his best to send a corner goalward.
‘‘We were definitely rusty,’’ Caversham coach Richard Murray said.
‘‘We looked like a team that hadn’t played for a year, especially in the final third.
‘‘Promising signs, and you’ve got to start somewhere, but frustrating at the same time.’’
Caversham 0, Dunedin Technical 0. Halftime: 0-0. Yellow cards: Caleb Mazure (Caversham),
