James Emanuel and the Amigos Bursary Fund: Supporting Football Dreams in the South
James Emanuel's journey to establish the Amigos Bursary Fund began when his youngest son entered the development and pathway space in junior football. Here, Emanuel discovered the significant financial burden placed on young athletes aspiring to reach the highest levels. Unlike the UK, where talented players are often scouted and fully supported by professional clubs, New Zealand's football scene operates on a user-pays model. This disparity, coupled with the lack of large professional clubs like Chelsea or Manchester City, highlighted a critical barrier to participation for many talented youth in the region. Emanuel saw a need and seized the opportunity to make a difference.
Inspiration Behind the Fund
Emanuel's initial inspiration stemmed from his own experiences in the UK, where football talent is nurtured without the burden of personal expenses. "Coming originally from the UK, albeit a long time ago, where young players are scouted out and have all their expenses paid for, I found this quite unusual," he reflects. Recognizing the stark contrast in New Zealand, where grassroots football must self-fund the international stage, Emanuel was moved to create a solution. The Amigos Bursary Fund was born out of a desire to alleviate financial constraints and support the region's dedicated and talented players.
A Lifelong Passion for Football
Emanuel's love for football traces back to his childhood in London. His earliest memories include participating in Bantam football at the age of four or five and being a season pass holder at Chelsea from the age of six. He vividly recalls a memorable 3-3 draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, a game marked by pouring rain and a dramatic late goal by John Bumstead. These early experiences cemented his passion for the game, a passion that would later fuel his commitment to supporting young players.
Fond Memories and Proud Achievements
Over the years, Emanuel has contributed significantly to the football community, coaching various levels and helping to develop young talent. "Teaching 'never playeds' to first kick and then compete is a great feeling," he shares, recounting the joy of seeing teams improve over a season. His involvement has led to tangible successes, including two players he coached now playing professionally for international teams. Emanuel also takes immense pride in watching his youngest son compete at the highest level for his age group.
Future Aspirations for Football
Looking ahead, Emanuel envisions a future where football is more inclusive and accessible. He hopes to contribute at the governance and finance level, advocating for changes in the women's game and addressing the impact of financial disparities on professional football. "My biggest hope is that somehow, some way we can give access to football for everyone under 8 or 9 for free," he says, emphasizing the need to encourage more children to engage in the sport.
Gratitude from Beneficiaries
The impact of the Amigos Bursary Fund is evident in the heartfelt thanks from its beneficiaries. Maisy McDonald, a Southern United squad member, expresses her gratitude for the financial support that eased travel and accommodation costs. "Southern has really helped me improve as a player and it has been an unreal experience the last 2 years," she shares. Similarly, Isla Smith and her family appreciate the grant that facilitated her participation in the Southern United U18 youth league. Isla's parents acknowledge the substantial commitment and resources required, while Isla herself cherishes the competitive environment and the opportunity to make the starting 11 in Auckland.
Through the Amigos Bursary Fund, James Emanuel has created a legacy that not only honors his passion for football but also nurtures the dreams of young players in New Zealand. His efforts demonstrate the profound impact of addressing financial barriers, ensuring that talent and dedication, rather than economic constraints, define the future of football.
