Dunedin Tech v Roslyn Wakari
Dunedin Technical, winners of the 2018 Kate Sheppard Cup and the only winners of the trophy from the Southern region, overcame Roslyn Wakari at the Turf yesterday. It was a game of milestones for a trio of players with Jordyn Walker earning her 200th cap for Roslyn and Chelsea Whittaker collecting her 150th cap and Katie Foulkes reaching her 50th for Dunedin Technical. Tech opened the scoring early on, opening up Roslyn using pace down the flanks. Shontelle Smith was a dynamo in midfield and her string-pulling helped Tech gain a 3-0 lead in the first half.
In the second half, Tech continued to dominate and as Roslyn ran out of steam, they conceded several more, with Margi Diaz scoring 4 and Nieve Collin bagging a brace. Hannah Mackay-Wright and Georgia Kennedy also managed to get themselves on the scoresheet, along with Chelsea Whittaker, who managed to grab a goal, the icing on the cake on a day which saw her clock up 150 appearances for Tech.
Otago University v Southland United
Otago University faced Southland United in United’s first competitive match. The Southland contingent consists of some of the region’s most talented footballers and they are coached by Carl Lambert. University dominated the game with the final score 7-0 to the home side. The prolific Amy Hislop contributed 5 goals with Beth Elliot and Joyce O’Brien also hitting the back of the net.
Queenstown v Green Island
In a repeat of last week’s league fixture, Queenstown faced Green Island. The visitors made it two wins from two against Rovers. The Island came from behind after Casey Klyn opened the scoring. Abby Vinicombe secured the equaliser for Green Island, calmly striking the ball into the back of the net. Stephanie Lee put the Island in the lead, slotting the ball into an empty net before Bianca Park secured victory for the Island in the latter stages of the match.
Mosgiel had the bye so they will progress to Round 2 alongside Tech, University and Queenstown. Round 2 fixtures will take place on the weekend of the 5th-7th June.
