Aaron Burgess tops the goal scoring table with 16 goals now from Caversham's Robbie Deeley on 12. Second placed Caversham travelled to Christchurch in preparation for their Chatham Cup quarter final against Ferrymead Bays with the knowledge of having three end of season catch up matches to make up the points difference with Dunedin Technical.
Tech’s goal scoring machine Aaron Burgess created more history with an astonishing half hour blitzkrieg on the Rovers goal where he netted five personal goals in a frenetic thirty minutes before half time.
A strong left sided run by Tech’s midfield General Andy Coburn set up the first goal in the eighteenth minute with an intuitive cross meeting its target and Burgess finishing with the precision of a German engineer as the ball nestled in the corner of the net past outstretched Rovers keeper Steve Henderson.
Tech’s confidence grew after the initial goal with right midfielder Michael Flaws and Coburn continuing the delivery of quality balls into the attacking zone which Burgess gratefully accepted. The hesitant Queenstown Rovers defence looked more leaden footed by the minute as a number of hairline offside claims by Queenstown defenders where declined by the match officials.
Both teams broke for intermission double checking the unlikely 6 – 2 half time score line which included two quality strikes from Rovers Oded Nathan.
Burgess regaled in displaying his full repertoire of clinical finishing skills as the marksman climbed to the top of the Golden boot ladder and only missed equalling his personal match record of six goals after hitting the Rovers woodwork three times in the second half as his goal seeking radar was fractionally off target.
Green’s Island recent good form continued when they notched three solid points against University. A close range Dan Rutter header opened Island's account which was levelled when Luke Macris converted a varsity penalty. An accurate acute angled shot from Jordan Higgins sealed the deal for Coach Malcolm Fleming’s young side.
In other matches on Saturday Mosgiel took all three points on offer and cemented third place after subduing a stubborn Grants Braes side that refused to lie down on the Memorial pitch. A pressurized Braes own goal broke the deadlock. Jeckel and Hyde imitators Roslyn Wakari fronted up against Spirit FC in Invercargill. The Southerners thanked young Jason Cocker for good finishing work in front of goal while Roslyn’s home grown talent Tom Connor etched his name on the score sheet replying on behalf of the Fraser Road fraternity.
