The following courses are available:
Introductory Referee Course
- An introduction to the Laws of the Game, aimed at coaches at all levels, parents, players and any interested parties. It is ideal if you want to referee club games, are called upon to referee the occasional game, or just want to know more about the game. No previous experience is necessary.
- The course takes up to 3 hours (depending on participation and questions) and can be run in an evening, or at the weekend over a morning or afternoon. There is no charge - the course is free.
- There is a 25 question multi-choice test at the end with a 70 per cent pass rate required to receive a certificate from New Zealand Football.

Level One Referee Course
- This is the course to start developing some basic referee skills. It will either build on the knowledge you gained at the Introductory Course or give you a better understanding of the Laws of the Game.
- You will learn basic signals for referees and assistant referees, look at how to control games, and get to analyse some challenges.
- The course takes between 8 and 10 hours and can be run over several week nights, over two sessions at a weekend, or can be presented in one day (with breaks). We can also organise a course so that participants can do the theory in the morning and then officiate at a game in the afternoon as part of the course.

- There is a 40 question multi-choice test at the end with a 70 per cent pass rate required to receive a certificate from New Zealand Football.
Level Two Referee Course
- This is the advanced course for those who have passed the Level 1 course and applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have refereed some 20 games at an appropriate level.
- You will further develop knowledge of the Laws of the Game, assess dangers and risk, look at communication skills, and advance as a referee.
- After the theory part, to gain a Level 2 referee badge you will be required to pass a fitness tests and be assessed on two field tests within two years of passing the theory test.
- There is an oral test on theory.

Level One and Two Assistant Referee Course
- More interested in linework? This is an option for those who want to be certificated as Assistants only. The course covers the Law relating to Assistants, working as part of a team, flag work and signals, fouls, and practical exercises.
- There are two levels. For Level 2 you must be at least 16 years of age and this course if for those wanting to put the theory into practice.
- The courses take up to 3 hours and can be run at a time to suit you. There is no test, it is participation only, and there is no charge.
